Well Marti Gras litteraly means fat tuesday which is the day before ash wednesday, the first day of lent. It is simply a celebration to "Get it all out of your system" before the solem fasting that starts the day after. It has pretty much always been frowned upon by the church which views it as a day of decadance and gluteny.
