I have been pondering this for a long time. When did the cap of estate first show up? I have thought about adding one to my noble wear, but I can't seem to find any reliable sources for when it first appeared in England, or what ranks were allowed to wear them.
I think I read somewhere that the color blue is used for Barons in Ireland, but I think I'll stick with red.

The Cap of Estate, or Cap of Maintenance as it is sometimes called, does not appear before the mid-fourteenth century as far as anyone can tell. It's exact origins are unknown, but it was restricted to peers or their heirs. Usually of crimson, turned-up ermine, it is occasionally found in other colours; but not often.

It may be a bit achronistic of me but I was considering making one of red wool or velvet with a mink brim to match my cloak of the same. If my design pulls through, it should end up looking a bit like a predicessor to the commonly depicted one.
