Alice is good but I don't know if it could really be considered a fairy tale or not. I mean really if you think about it, there's a lot of social commentary. And then the overt drug reference, sort of takes away from the mystical or legendary aspects of it. But in answer to the question there, My favorite is the tale of St. George and the Dragon. That story is so awesome that in spite of it's age, it still crops up in the form of many sci-fi films and books. The really interesting point of it is that as you look at it there are several ways to read into it. On the surface, it's just another dragon slayer story, but many of times it has been read as one big metaphor. The dragon being Representative of any number of sins, specifically or sin in general, the maiden be Representative of chastity, purity, innocence, and basically the ideal of a woman in the era, and on a sub-conscious level, today. The maiden can be dealt with as a "female" in the story or just a collaboration of the ideals present in her (and in the greater context all of us). George is held of course to be the purifying force in this. He is there-by held as being "One good man", a symbol of the power of God (as he works through the pure and righteous), or even as the will power in each of us to drive off the wrongs in life. Dealing with this allegorically we have the Maid; who is an unwilling pawn. The lot fell on her and her daddy not willing to spare her for fear of the people, sends her as a sacrifice to the dragon. She is there by forced into a situation with no escape. I feel we can all relate to that, the sense of having thrust upon us that which we feel there is no way out of. Many feel this way about sin. Then along comes George who is the example of chivalry. He arrives and hears the situation. Then with the power of the Lord, goes without hesitation to slay the dragon who has been desolating the country-side for ages, or so it seems. George, of course is victorious. He makes a public statement by first putting the beast (sin, immorality, and all other forms of debauchery) into the control of the meek and helpless (symbolized by the maiden) by carving the sign of the cross into it's hide (we all know what the cross represents), and then after he has her lead the beast into the center of the village, he slays it in one fell stroke. Then the father of the maiden uses the word that condemned his daughter as his redeeming grace as he lives up to the promise he made to George. He has everyone in this apparently pagan village, baptized and then builds a church. Both halves of the story are thus more about the abolishing of sin through the power of Christ. But I could be reading a bit more into it than I should.

If I was to say I had a favorite fairy tail it would have to be Peter Pan. Why, you ask a girl would like Peter Pan well in the world today everyone and everything is always so serious. I on the other hand look at life as being to short to be serious all the time. Now don't get me wrong there is a time to be serious and a time to have fun. But, Like Peter Pan, We dont have to be grown up all the time. Let the inner child flow.

Jack the Giant Killer is a favourite of mine too. I love Arthur Rackham's illustrations to this story; and of course the Ray Harryhausen monsters in the movie version, and Torin Thatcher as the evil sorcerer, Pendragon.
