If your anything like me, you didn't start role playing in your mother's womb. So that means that at some time you were new at this. Well to help with that issue and to help you put together a good role play, we have this little how to.
First: Role plays on this site work mainly as stories where off of the original post, people who agree to take the part of specific characters in the story, write in their character's part. So it works like those "round-robin" stories back in grade school.
Second: You don't just dive into an established role play. It throws off those that stared it, and if you use their character, it messes up the flow of the story. So you need to ask permission to either take over a role or create a new character. You do this in the OT thread.
Third: What the freak is an "OT"? OT is "Off Topic". In this category there is a board for threads that give the premise and set up for a role play where the person who starts a new role play asks for volunteers to portray specific characters, and can be contacted to request the fore-mentioned permission. The thread will be (role play title)-OT. This lets you know which role play it goes with. It also allows discussion for where the story is headed. It should also state which sub-board it is in.
So if you follow this general format it should go smoothly.
