A half hour is way too short to give any kind of real educational demo.

I've just been looking through the photos of your recent events, and while everyone obviously entered into the spirit of things, I'm surprised that you were expected to cram any kind of decent display into only half an hour. I'm just back from Ashby de la Zouche Castle, made famous by Sir Walter Scott in his novel 'Ivanhoe'; and this was a very family orientated event rather than pure living history. Fun was very much the theme of the weekend - as learning should be. There was a knights' school workshop comprising tilting at the quintain, swordplay and then knighting ceremony for the qualifiers. This was followed by a children's re-enactment of the battle of Bannockburn, then a talk on arms and armour, the armyng of the knyght, and finally a full contact tourney (which we played a bit tongue-in-cheek). English Heritage reported back to us that there were glowing reports made about the event. Children were going home beaming with delight and utterly exhausted. There were queues of volunteers for every entertainment; but all this could only be pulled-off by staggering the events throughout the course of each day, with the result that the feedback that we received was that everyone had not only had fun but learned a lot in the process. Nevertheless; very well done for having taken up the challenge of trying to fit a demonstration into a half-hour slot; and as I say, it was clearly enjoyed by all.

We are currently trying to work out something with our town's local school. Every year the sixth grade does a big medieval studies unit and ends it with a day long medieval faire. I think if we get our suggestions in early this year we might be able to make for an unforgettable time for the students.

That would be sweet and i would love to see what we the group and the school could come up with now only if they would use the old foot ball felled for it. that would make it even better you know.
