I'm rather fond of the silent Russian film "Alexander Nievsky". It faithfully tells the LEGEND of the great hero of medieval Russia that helped to loose the grips of several forign powers that all tried to deny it's sovriegnty. I emphasize legend because it is a highly idealized rendition of actual events.

My favorite movie history wise is The Blue and The Gray, and also North and South. these two movies show just what life was like for the world back then.

Alexander Nevsky is one of my favourites too; but one film I thought I'd like to mention is from the seventies, and it's called 'Trial by Combat', although I believe it was also released under the title 'A Hard Knight's Work'. It stars John Mills, Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasance; and though it's really corny, it always makes me smile. The plot revolves around a jousting troop who take the law into their own hands. The knights start kidnapping high profile criminals who have escaped justice because of lack of evidence or because they have friends in high places etc, and they put them on trial by combat. I've so far been unable to track down either a DVD or any clips of it on youtube; but has anyone else seen it?

I have not seen it, but I am a huge Peter Cushing fan. My Step-dad, Sir John, is into low budget films and he might be able to help track it down.

Me too: and speaking of Peter Cushing reminds me of another film. This one is from 1973, and was directed by Stephen Weeks. It's 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight'; and it was done, again, on a low budget. I saw it a couple of times on TV as a child, but I've never seen it since. About 1982, Weeks re-did the film as 'Sword of the Valiant'. This time he had a bigger budget, but not that much bigger. He managed to secure a few well known faces, but only for cameo roles. Sean Connery was the Green Knight, Trevor Howard was King Arthur, John Rhys Davies was the villainous Baron Fortinbras, and Peter Cushing was his wily Seneschal. One actor who appeared in both films was Ronald Lacey as the slimy Oswald. Both films combine the legend of Gawin and the Green Knight with the story of the Countess of the Fountain; also sometimes known as Sir Owain and the Fountain. The later version has been on TV a few times, and is available on DVD, but I'd love to catch the original again, even though it has been compared to Monty Python and the Holy Grail (there's a story that the two films shared some props!).

Just don't speak ill of Monty Python. You might offend someone (me). I have seen "The Sword of the Valliant" Admittedly it was good, but the Green Knight's costume left something to be desired. I recently had a chance to watch 'Arn the Knight Templar'. It was interesting but the heraldry in the costumes just seemed off to me. The style of the fighting used by the title character seemed very uncharacteristic of the period too. I don't know of any references to single handed swords being used in the up-sie-down "ice pick" grip during the second crusade. I've also heard, but as of yet been unable to evaluate the truth of the statement that left handed people were viewed as heritics.

No offence intended, so please don't say 'Ni' at me: I merely meant that 'Gawain & the Green Knight' has been regarded by critics as a tongue-in-cheek production!
I've recently seen 'Arn, the Knight Templar' as well, and the heraldry is of the Knights of Christ, not the Templars. The former were an order created in Portugal to replace the Templars after the latter was dissolved. I also think the fencing in this film is a bit fanciful.
It's funny you mention the Green Knight's costume, because a few weeks ago I was on holiday in Cornwall. Some of the scenes in John Boorman's 'Excalibur' were filmed in Tintagel, and one of the shops in the village had a few pieces of Terry English's armour on display: one of which was the Green Knight's armour from 'Sword of the Valiant'.
Left-handedness was certainly regarded as 'unnatural' in the Middle Ages; and in many crafts and trades there's still to be found some prejudice against left-handed people. Medieval folk would be taught to use the right hand instead.

It's under another title "Choice of Weapons". One of the ladies in the group suggested it as a possibility for the group movie night. I have it in hand right now, I'm going to ask her where she found it.
